This morning, I had the absolute pleasure of speaking at the South West Disability Expo in Liverpool at the Whitland Centre. The last time I was there was approximately 50 years ago, when I was swimming in the lead-up to the High School State Championships, representing Camden High School, and I rolled away feeling both grateful and inspired, pumped for the next one.
It was a fantastic opportunity to share my lived experience of accessible travel and flying after spinal injury, something that sits at the very heart of what I do through The Travelling Para. The reception I received was incredibly kind and welcoming. Although the audience was small, they were deeply attentive and engaged, which always makes for the best conversations.
What stood out most was the discussion at the end. I was asked several thoughtful and very pertinent questions, particularly from people who are considering flying for the first time since becoming wheelchair users. Those moments, when you can see confidence starting to replace uncertainty, are exactly why I do this work. If sharing my experiences helps even one person feel more prepared to travel, then it’s worth every minute.
Beyond the presentation itself, the Expo provided a wonderful chance to connect with others who are also passionate about opening up travel opportunities for people with disabilities. It’s always encouraging to see how many individuals and organisations are working towards the same goal: making travel more accessible, more respectful, and more achievable.
Overall, it was a very worthwhile Expo to attend, and I’m genuinely thankful for the opportunity.
Next on the horizon, I’m looking forward to speaking at the Rotary Club of Wynnum and Manly in Brisbane, followed by the ATSA Independent Living Expo at the Sydney Showground on 13–14 May. I’m excited to keep these conversations moving and continue advocating for better, more dignified travel experiences for anyone in our Wheelchair users community.
