Airbus & Aircraft-Wide Innovation for Wheelchair Users
The future of in-chair flying (why it’s hard… but absolutely doable)
One of the biggest fears many wheelchair users have about flying isn’t the flight itself; it’s boarding, transfers, and the risk of wheelchair damage.
So the question many of us ask is simple:
“Why can’t I stay in my own wheelchair on the aircraft?”
The good news? The aviation world is finally moving in that direction. It’s not mainstream yet, but the innovation is happening, and it’s exciting.
Why staying in your wheelchair during a flight is difficult
Aeroplanes are highly regulated environments. To allow a person to remain seated in their own wheelchair inside the cabin, the wheelchair and securement space must meet strict aviation rules.
That means the wheelchair space must:
- Be crash-tested to aviation safety standards
- Have approved restraint systems (similar to what’s used in accessible vehicles, but aviation-certified)
- Fit safely within aircraft evacuation rules and aisle clearance requirements
This is why in-chair flying has been “almost impossible” for so long, not because it isn’t needed, but because it requires engineering, certification, and major industry change.

Advocacy + engineering is driving change
Groups like All Wheels Up, along with manufacturers and aviation partners, are working on the real-world problems:
- safe restraint systems
- crash testing and certification pathways
- aircraft interior design changes
- pushing regulators to approve certified solutions
This is how progress happens: design + proof + pressure.
Airbus: a concept that shows where the future is heading
Airbus has publicly revealed a concept design that aims to allow wheelchair users to remain in their own wheelchairs inside the cabin, rather than transferring into an airline seat.
Their concept includes:
- a wheelchair tie-down / securement system designed for aircraft interiors
- a dedicated space that could allow a companion to sit nearby
- a modular layout idea, designed to fit into existing aircraft interiors with minimal disruption
To be clear: this is concept work, not yet a certified product or an airline-wide standard.
But it matters because it shows Airbus is thinking about this properly, not as a “special service”, but as a future cabin feature.
Industry solutions are being developed right now
This isn’t just Airbus. Across the industry, multiple organisations are working on systems that could make in-chair flying possible on real aircraft.
Delta Air Lines / Delta Flight Products (DFP)
Delta Flight Products (a Delta affiliate) has been developing a prototype securement system, often linked with the Air4All consortium, designed so passengers can remain in their wheelchairs onboard.
The big goal: create a wheelchair space without reducing overall seat count by using a convertible design.
This has been showcased at major aircraft interior events and may move toward real-world certification in the coming years.
Air4All Consortium (multi-industry collaboration)
The Air4All Consortium is a cross-sector team combining design, disability advocacy, certification expertise and wheelchair manufacturing — with industry support from Delta’s flight products arm, to create a commercially viable accessible aircraft seating system for powered wheelchair users.
Air4All is one of the most serious global efforts aiming to allow powered wheelchair users to stay in their own chairs during flight.
It involves multiple partners, including:
- design studio PriestmanGoode
- wheelchair manufacturers such as Sunrise Medical
- certification experts SWS Certification
Air4All could be adopted worldwide either through:
- aftermarket conversions (retrofitting aircraft)
- or new aircraft interior designs
JetZero (Z4 aircraft concept)
The JetZero Z4 concept is led by JetZero, Inc. with foundational leadership from co-founders Tom O’Leary and Mark Page, supported by aerospace partners like Scaled Composites, Pratt & Whitney and Collins Aerospace, backed by U.S. Air Force funding, and championed by airline investors including United, Alaska and Delta.
JetZero is designing a new aircraft (a blended wing body / wide-body concept) and is talking openly about building wheelchair accessibility into the aircraft from day one, not as a retrofit.
This includes space and features intended to secure wheelchair users in their own mobility devices as part of the cabin design.
JetZero has gained interest and backing from major airlines, including Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta, which suggests accessibility is being taken seriously at the highest levels.
Collins Aerospace
Collins Aerospace is a major American aerospace and defence technology company staffed by tens of thousands of engineers and specialists worldwide working on integrated solutions from cockpits and cabins to power and data systems, and is owned by a larger aerospace conglomerate.
Collins Aerospace has also developed a concept wheelchair seating/securement solution aimed at allowing wheelchair users to remain seated in their chair during flight, with amenities comparable to those of other passengers.
Concept features include:
- integrated tray table access
- power outlets
- emergency egress considerations
- a flexible cabin module design
Two big approaches: retrofit vs brand-new aircraft design
Delta Flight Products + Air4All: a convertible seat module (retrofit-friendly)
Think of this like a normal seat that converts into a wheelchair bay.
- two modes: standard seat mode + wheelchair/PRM mode
- conversion time: around 90 seconds (as described in concept material)
- designed for today’s aircraft cabins
- focused on minimal disruption + keeping seat numbers
Big idea: Make accessibility possible now, without waiting for new aircraft.
JetZero Z4: accessibility built into the aircraft from the beginning
This isn’t a seat module, it’s a whole new aircraft design.
JetZero’s accessibility ambitions are about:
- better access routes through the cabin
- wheelchair-friendly architecture
- accessible facilities designed as standard
Big idea: Solve it at the aircraft level, not as a “bolt-on fix”.
Why this matters (and why I’m watching it closely)
As wheelchair users, we already know the reality:
Our wheelchairs aren’t just “equipment”.
They’re our independence, mobility, safety, and freedom.
So when the aviation industry starts designing aircraft that allow us to stay in our own chairs, it’s more than innovation.
It’s dignity.
It’s equality.
And it’s long overdue.
